This was the headline of a century-old ad for the Brown Shoe Company. Though we’ve since changed our name to Caleres, that headline still defines our history and fuels our future.
When we began in 1878, we practically invented the modern footwear industry. Before then, most men’s and women’s shoes in America were the same shoes. Even left and right shoes were the same.
Our founding vision was simple, yet ambitious: To provide every man, woman and child shoes that fit perfectly. We took advantage of new factory capabilities to produce men’s shoes and women’s shoes, left shoes and right shoes. And we created the Star-5-Star mark. Stamped on the bottom of all our shoes, it represented a $5 bill and our promise: If the shoes ever felt uncomfortable before the mark wore off, we gave you back $5.
Today, we work hard to remain an innovator in our industry. We create different styles for different occasions. We deliver cutting edge retail concepts. And our ferocity for fit continues to burn as bright as it did in 1878.
